The Groot Eiland Cellar lies at the foot of the majestic Du Toitskloof mountain range in the Western Cape, South Africa. With cascading winter waterfalls providing a stunning canvass, the area is well known for its extraordinary scenery, excellent wines, friendly and hospitable people.

The unusual name Groot Eiland (big island) derives from the fact that our cellar and its farms are literally surrounded by the water of the great Breede and Molenaars rivers.

The Wine Cellar, surrounded by sunbathed vineyards, is located on the banks of these two large meanderings rivers. An average winter rainfall of 650 mm per year results in deep, fertile alluvial soil and lush vineyard growth.

The surrounding snow- covered mountains of the Du Toitskloof and Bossieveld ranges make for spectacular scenery in winter. Long, extremely warm summer days and superb evenings offer great outdoor entertainment and adventures.

Just 45 minutes from Cape Town, Groot Eiland and indeed the greater Breedekloof valley is, for many, a joy waiting to be discovered.

Still offering unspoilt countryside, the area offers some of the best trout fishing in South Africa; scenic cycling routes, mountain bike rides, horse-riding through the vineyards, quad and 4x4 excursions for the energetic. Hikers will love the craggy mountain ranges, fynbos and endemic bird life. For those looking to linger, accommodation can be found on the wine farms, in the mountains and along the banks of the river.
